According to the International Triathlon Union and USA Triathlon, main international race distances are:
- Sprint distance: 750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run
- Intermediate (or Standard) distance: commonly known as 'Olympic distance': 1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run
- Long course; commonly known as 70.3 or the 'Half-Ironman'; 1.9km swim, 90km bike, 21.1km run
- Ultra distance; commonly referred to as 140.6 or the 'Ironman'; 3.8km swim, 180.2 km bike, and a full marathon: 42.2km run.
- Mini or Discovery and Youth: 250m swim, 10km bike, 2.5km run
- Kids: 150m swim, 5km bike, 1.5km run
